Description
Circa 1799. Thomas Mann Randolph, governor of the state of Virginia and son-in-law of Thomas Jefferson, built Clifton. One of the guest rooms boasts a winter view of Jefferson's estate, Monticello. Elegance and a careful attention to historical detail have enabled this historic country inn to garner national awards for its accommodations, cuisine and wine cellar, including four stars from Mobil. In addition to the main house, guests can choose Garden Rooms, Livery Suites or the two-level Carriage House. Aside from the abundance of history, Clifton also offers a variety of recreational facilities, including a clay tennis court, swimming pool with waterfall, year-round heated whirlpool spa and private lake. Ask for a gardener-led tour of the inn's 100 acres of landscaped grounds. Breakfast at Clifton is a treat with continental breakfast buffet and full breakfast. Afternoon tea is also served. Clifton operates a gourmet, four-diamond restaurant featuring three- and six-course dinners prepared by Executive Chef Christopher Carey.Publicity and Awards: International Living, Country Inns, Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Richmond Times Dispatch, Rural Retreats, New York Times, Travel & Leisure, Southern Living, Martha Stewart Weddings, New York Times, Washingtonian Magazine, etc.Location: Mountains and Country.
