Description
Circa 1819. Civil war relics and southern hospitality await guests at this cultivated plantation located between Williamsburg and Richmond. Owned by the great, great grandson of Edwin Ruffin, the man who fired the first shot of the Civil War, the 1819 mansion has original mantels and stair carvings, as well as a number of Greek Revival features from the 1853 remodeling. The mansion is full of antiques, including the plantation desk used by General Sheridan when the Union Troops occupied the area in 1864. The desk still has the labels Sheridan placed on pigeonholes, and the eastern edge of the property still has Civil War breastworks. The five guests rooms, each spacious and complemented with family antiques and collectibles, range from the quaint Maids Quarters to The Sheridan Room with a Queen tester bed circa 1810 and Sheridan's desk. After a full country breakfast including delights like homemade waffles, omelets, biscuits, bacon, sausage, fruit and juice, guests may venture out on the grounds to swim or play croquet, horseshoes or volleyball. A park with nature trails and a fishing pier is just three miles from the mansion and a public golf course is 20 minutes away.Publicity and Awards: Daily Press, Richmond Times Dispatch, New York Times, Mid-Atlantic Country, Washington Post, Travel Talk, Southern Hospitality, Channel 12.Location: Country.
