Description

Circa 1877. Listed in the Minnesota historic register, this modified Italianate Victorian was built by a prominent Red Wing businessman. The interior woodwork of Candlelight Inn is an impressive sight. Butternut, cherry, oak and walnut combine throughout the house to create the rich parquet floors and stunning grand staircase. A crackling fire in the library welcomes guests and its leather furnishings and wide selection of books make this a great location for relaxation. The wraparound-screened porch offers comfortable wicker furnishings. Each of the guest rooms includes a fireplace, and three rooms also feature a whirlpool tub. Homemade scones, fresh peaches with custard sauce and wild rice quiche are some of the gourmet breakfast dishes. The Mississippi River town of Red Wing features many historic homes and buildings, as well as shops, restaurants and the restored Sheldon Theater. Hiking and biking trails are nearby, as well as Treasure Island Casino.Publicity and Awards: Minnesota Monthly, Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine.Location: City/Urban.

Historic Interest

The Candlelight Inn was occupied by five families before becoming an inn in 1989. The families included a doctor, a pharmacist, a dentist, and a school superintendent. No major structural changes have been made and all of the wood has its original finish, largely due to the 50-year occupancy of the Van Guilder family (1915-1965). In fact, before becoming The Candlelight Inn, it was known as The Van Guilder House. Original Quezal lighting fixtures are found throughout and the captain's wheel motif in the original stained-glass windows is repeated in the balustrade of the main staircase.
