Eventually, three homes had been combined into this one rambling structure, a common occurrence in New England in the 1800s. Several garden areas have perennial and annual flowers as well as vegetables and herbs. The home is decorated with fine art, antiques and memorabilia that reflects the innkeepers' interests in gardening, music and sailing. At Penury Hall, every effort is made to make guests feel at home. Guests may store food items in the fridge, wash clothes in the laundry room and play games or listen to music in the library. “We had a wonderful time at Penury Hall with Gretchen Stone. She is a gracious hostess and served a delightful and varied breakfast all four mornings of our stay. We liked Southwest Harbor on the "quiet side" better than the better known Bar Harbor. Our room -- the Admiralty Room -- was spacious, clean and comfortable. You should know that while each room has a private and exclusive bath assigned to it, each bath is outside the bedroom, across or down a short hall. This did not trouble us, but you should have a robe. We hope to return again. Bill and Doris”

“Having stayed at Marriotts (or better) as a business traveler, I always feel like I'm rolling the dice when booking a B&B. No worries; Penury Hall is a clear winner! Gretchen Strong is a very hospitable host, a wonderful cook, and an informative and helpful guide to the wonders of Southwest Harbor. Our Admiral's Room was quite comfortable, and our just-across-the-hall private bath (with shower) was still convenient - very bright and nicely furnished. A very enjoyable stay!!

“Loved the homey atmosphere. The two cats were a nice extra. Enjoyed the lovely flower beds and weeding with Gretchen. An easy walk to local spots. Our room was spacious and comfortable and we liked the early sunrise. The breakfasts were yummy. We felt very welcome and at home at Penury Hall. Marjorie and John, Summer 2014”
