Historic Interest

In 1830 this house originated as a mercantile shop, operating during the last 6 years of President James Madison's life. The house was once owned by one of President James Madison's grand-nephews, John Madison Chapman. During one of the Civil War skirmishes that were fought in the town's streets, according to local legend, a Confederate soldier died on the porch steps of the Holladay House. The Holladay Family owned this property for 101 years and ran their general practice out of the main part of the home.
